Sign up for the Thrifty.

December 29th, 2008

If there was ever a bonspiel in synch with the times, it must be the Thrifty. This event could be the best bargain of the curling season.

The entry fee is so reasonable it borders on ridiculous. Consider all that this spiel offers. There’s good curling. There’s usually a Pipe & Drum band. There’s endless food, including the haggis for those who are adventurous. (I’m someone who doesn’t typically consume a lot of innards but I must say I rather enjoy them at this time of year.). There’s a trifle elimination match that is hotly contested. Though I realize the Scots will shudder that I’m turning to the French to sum things up, there’s a certain joie de vivre about the Thrifty that I think makes it a terrific spiel.

The link to the Thrifty is in the sidebar on the right. After years of outstanding service, Bruce and Karen Thomas have turned over the reins this year to Tom Orians and Bill MacDonald. I’m sure this new management team is working hard to continue past traditions and establish new ones. Apparently, it’s also the 250th Anniversary of the birth of Robbie Burns — that will surely bring a generous lash of all that is Robbie Burns-ish.

Finally, it’s the first spiel at our club since the rocks were re-textured. So burying rocks behind guards will definitely be a new tradition this year.
