About the Plainfield Curling Club

New Jersey Curling Since ’63

The Plainfield Curling Club (PCC) was founded in 1963 and is the only curling club active with its own indoor ice facility in New Jersey.  For the first three years, the PCC operated on rented ice, even curling outdoors for one season. In 1966-67, the current structure was built.  The PCC was planned, designed, and financed by the members, who also did much of the actual construction themselves.  The PCC is a not-for-profit organization, and continues to be member-owned; it is operated and maintained by members’ dues and members’ efforts.  The PCC is governed by a 9-member Board of Directors, from which the officers of the PCC are elected (President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary). Our curling season runs approximately from November to April, during which members can choose to participate in regularly scheduled weeknight and weekend leagues. The PCC also hosts various in-house bonspiels (curling tournament, usually lasting over a weekend) over the course of the season. We provide all the necessary equipment. However, many members elect to purchase their own shoes and brooms.

Affiliations

USCA

The Plainfield Curling Club is affiliated with the United States Curling Association (USCA).  The USCA, a non-profit entity, is the national organizing body for all curling clubs in the Unites States.  The USCA has established the official rules of play for national events, which include the regional playdowns and the annual National Championships (the winners of which compete in the World Championships).  The USCA provides funding for Junior curling, training programs, and curling promotions.  It tracks the standings of all competitive curlers and is the curling community’s liaison to the United States Olympic Committee.

GNCC

The Plainfield Curling Club is affiliated with the Grand National Curling Club (GNCC), a non-profit entity, whose purpose is to promote curling within the Eastern United States (member clubs are in the area east of Pittsburgh and as far south as Florida).  It has established the official rules of play for its member clubs, and annually sponsors a number of competitions.

USWCA

We are also affiliated with the United States Women’s Curling Association (USWCA), which promotes women’s curling in the United States and sponsors a number of events for female curlers.  It is an affiliate of the USCA and as such has a representative on the USCA board.

In addition to these structured organizations, the PCC is a member of the Mid Atlantic Curling Association (MACA), a loose affiliation of the Plainfield, Chesapeake, Philadelphia, and Potomac Curling Clubs.  Started in the late 1980’s, the MACA was formed to foster good will among the clubs in the GNCC and provide a friendly forum for new curlers to hone their skills in a less competitive bonspiel atmosphere. Fitting its informal nature, there are no dues for membership in the MACA. Because the PCC is a member of these organizations, our club members are eligible to participate in events sponsored by these organizations. The PCC dues for membership in each is determined by the number of club members; women members in the case of the USWCA.
