When our ice was melted at the end of April — like nearly all curling clubs, we’re open from early October to the middle of April — an extraordinary season came to a close.

We saw the Olympics bring an incredible surge of interest in the world’s greatest game. There was our Open House in February — an event that was more like Woodstock than a day when a curling facility offers people a chance to try the sport for the first time. In April, we had another Open House and brought hundreds more through the doors and onto the ice. Going into the 2010-2011, we’re doing everything we can to accommodate people who want to join our two-sheet club and learn to curl. Our club has a long history of warmly welcoming newcomers but, for the first time ever, capacity is now our issue — a two-sheet facility can only accommodate so many curlers. (If you’re reading this right now and you want to start curling next season, make sure you’ve added your name to our new member waiting list. It’s in the sidebar on the right.)

There were other highlights during the 2009-2010 season. Many others, in fact. But here are a few that are worth noting.

Members of our club had one of our most successful seasons of competition, with junior, women’s and men’s players curling on teams that posted excellent results in both national events and area bonspiels. Thanks to a remarkable ice crew and some recent capital investments, the playing conditions at our club were outstanding. And our own bonspiels continued to reflect the PCC tradition of first-rate hospitality and friendly competition.

We’re pursuing some off-season renovations and planning for a successful 2010-2011 season. Next year, we’re expecting many new faces at our club. We know they’ll quickly discover why curling is such an incredible sport.

Enjoy the summer.

A big thank you to everyone who made our Olympic Open House a success! Well over 500 visitors came through our door to spend time on our ice — easily the most visitors we’ve ever had in a single day! Our volunteers stayed late to make sure that everyone who arrived before 6pm and waited in line got the chance to get on our ice.

So many of you braved the traffic, parked in muddy spaces, and spent hours lined up in our cold and muddy parking lot just for a few minutes of ice time. Yet we saw nothing but enthusiasm while curling and smiles on the way out. We are extremely pleased to share the spirit of curling with so many new faces.

Our available Learn To Curl classes filled up almost immediately and we have pages of names on a waiting list. Be sure to contact us if you want to keep up on the latest info on our offerings. It may take us a little time to respond to your messages during a very busy end of our curling season, but we’re determined to keep on top of this.

The photos we took during the day are shared in our Flickr account. Please be sure to check these out!

Thanks again to everyone!
