The Plainfield Curling Club invites you to the 22nd Annual Robbie Burns Thrifty & Jean Marc Fluet Memorial Bonspiel January 21-24, 2010.
Come join in the fun of the Plainfield Curling Club’s annual bonspiel in honor or Scottish poet Robert Burns. There will be Haggis and Bridies with other traditional Scottish foods and Pipers too. The event offers every team a three game guarantee and a prize for all four event winners and the runner up. All Meals are included especially Saturday Night’s Scottish dinner delights and Trifle dessert contest.
A bonspiel in GNCC you won’t want to miss! Entry Fee $160 – A very “Thrifty” Bonspiel Price!
During a recent visit to our club, 2010 U.S. Mens Olympic Curling Team Member Chris Plys demonstrated this difficult curling trick which I’d never seen before! Watch him slide out of the hack backwards and spin around on the ice.
Chris will next appear on the Dec. 28th episode of Bank Of Hollywood, a new reality show from E! and producer Ryan Seacrest.
It’s an exciting time for curling, and not only because the 2010 Winter Olympic Games are coming up in just a couple of months. Stephen Colbert, host of The Colbert Report on Comedy Central, is on mission to become a member of the United States Olympic Team!
Be sure to watch the very end of that bobsled attempt where he announces his next attempt will be at curling!
Will this be the Olympic sport for him? And where is he making this historic tryout? Is that
the ice at the Plainfield Curling Club in South Plainfield, NJ, conveniently located less than an hour from his New York City studio? Why, yes it is!
Be sure to watch an upcoming episode of the The Colbert Report for the next installment of “Stephen Colbert’s Skate Expectations – Kicking Ice And Taking Donations On The Slippery Slope Down The Icy Path To The Frozen Road Up To Vancouver ‘010″.
Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report and the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team for Men’s Curling (John Shuster, Jason Smith, Jeff Isaacson, John Benton, Chris Plys) recently took time from their busy schedules to visit our humble facility along with esteemed guests from USA Curling. Several of our members also stopped by to meet the group. Thank you to all our guests and members for making this a fun and memorable experience!
Also thank you to Ernie Feiteira for the video below:
If you’re interested in trying curling this season, our club is holding two special Mid-Season Clinics for Newcomers. The clinics will be on December 27th and January 3rd from 2-5 PM. For $40, you’ll receive six hours of instruction in the basics of the sport — delivering the stone, sweeping, game play and basic strategy. It’s a great opportunity to get a solid introduction to curling.
If you complete the clinics and decide to join the club, the $40 clinic fee will be deducted from the cost of a one-time, introductory Half-Season membership. While our club is thriving and we have some leagues that are at capacity, there are openings for newcomers.
This is an open bonspiel just for curlers with five or fewer years of curling experience. It will be held December 11-13, 2009 at the PCC. There’s limited space, so submit your entries soon!
Please visit Lifeskate.com to view a great piece about curling that reporter Susan Chun conducted at the Ardsley Curling Club during last years McKay Douglas men’s bonspiel. In it, she interviews our own Bill Peskoff, Eric Blassneck, and Don Baird. Bob Howell, Thomas Howell and Bob Graham also make appearances in the video.
The Founders wrapped up this past Sunday and this year’s spiel was a great success. While event chairs Jeff and Emily Pike have already thanked the scores of members who helped make everything run so well, I’d like to express my appreciation to both of them for all the hard work they put into the bonspiel. It was their first year running things and they poured themselves into the job. A full draw of teams, great hospitality, outstanding ice — it was another terrific event at PCC.
The events continue at our club with the Women’s All-American underway this upcoming weekend. Many thanks to Brady Gould for running this event — he now has a full draw and a schedule that sees games on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday
Finally, on December 10-13, the USWCA Five-and-Under Challenge will be at our club. This is an open-format event so I encourage all of our members with five years or less of curling experience to enter a team. It’s a great way to test the waters at a more competitive event — put together a team and enjoy the opportunity. Contact Event Chairs Eric Blassneck and Robin Kerr for more information.
